I Am Running Off Of 3 Hours of Sleep and A Red Bull.

Being an artist who sits in that grey area between fine artist, content creator and service provider, a lot of times I find myself doing things that don’t serve me.

So when I got the opportunity to create some fake Red Bull ads from recap photos from a recent rager, I rolled up my sleeves and got physical.

The Report

Goal:

  1. Make something cool from the photos taken at the College Daze rager that happened a few weekends ago.

  2. Do it in one night (That night happened to be the night before I had to go to Raleigh and shoot photos for Dreamville, lol)

Introduction:

  • Why?

I’ve been needing a fun project to do that required me to get creative with my hands & use the physical tools I have. I also wanted really wanted to execute a concept that I’ve been had on my inspo board.

[Lately I have been super into texture being present in a photo, specifically tape.]

Hypothesis:

If I spend all night leveraging my physical art tools to create physical collages, I will be able to create digital ads for Red Bull that display the rawness of college life through abstract and symbolic elements while also upholding the identity of the brand.

Materials:

Printer | Printing paper | Scissors | Clear tape | Permanent marker | Red Bull Cans (drank & undrank) | Clear spray paint | Digital camera | Desk Lamp

Variables:

Independent: Red Bull Cans

Dependent: Me

Methods:

  1. Print out all the photos that @jio.visuals took at the rager. (My printer was running out on ink at the perfect time. The pictures printed out with interesting pink and orange streaks. This helped with creating an interesting base)

  2. Use my permanent marker to outline any interesting people in the printed out photos.

  3. Spray paint the photos with clear spray paint to make the color from the ink richer.

  4. Cut out any figures that can be layered on top of full printed photos.

  5. Tape those cut outs on top of the photos.

  6. Crush up cans of Red Bull and place them around the collages.

  7. Spill some of the drink on to the photos.

  8. Use the digital camera to take photos of the drink spilling on the collages.

  9. Digially edit the colors and lighting in Lightroom.

  10. Digitally edit on digital photo clippings, wings and tape overlays on top of the photos.

  11. Add the logo

Done!

Results(Data):

6 collages turned edits that I am turned into posters.

Conclusion:

In conclusion these edits came out better than I could have ever imagined. Even though It took me like 6 hours to get them all together because there was a ton of trial and error, I think it was all worth it. I got 3 hours of sleep that night but I think that just speaks to Red Bull’s slogan. In crunchtime Red Bull gives you wings to fly. Going into this project I knew that there would be no immediate return on creating them, I just wanted to do something fun. But if Red Bull wants to work on an actual campaign, this is me shooting my shot.
