"Miss Juneteenth" Limited Edition Woven Tapestry Blanket
In celebration of Juneteenth this year I designed a woven blanket that honors and expands the Juneteenth flag. The brainchild of activist Ben Haith, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (NJCF) the original Juneteenth flag was created in 1997 with the Lisa Jeanne Graf. Revised in 2000 it features a white star in the middle representing Texas, “The Lone Star State” & the freedom of all Black people in the USA. The flag also features a starburst inspired by the nova or “new star.” Lastly it features an arch separating the blue and red color representing a new horizon for Black Americans. Haith says the use of the blue and red represents, “continuous commitment of people in the United States to do better – and to live up to the American ideal of liberty and justice for all.”
In this reimagination I wanted to expand the use of the star & highlight how Black American history is a vital part to American history as a whole. The Red and Blue is interwoven with green and black to highlight the diverse Black experience while also calling to the fact that We are not all free until we are ALL free. In the center of the blanket is my Mama Sun silhouette that speaks the beauty and strength of the woman & her role in Black American culture. At the center of my universe feminine energy balances with masculine energy to create complex and diverse galaxies. Lastly at the top & bottom sits two tambourines decorated in my the sun & the moon, to represent that everything starts and ends with us. Loosely inspired by the Miss Juneteenth movie, this blanket seeks to magnify and celebrate this holiday and its place in the greater universe.
